National Year of Reading

2012 is the National Year of Reading, an initiative by all Australian libraries and library associations to foster a love of reading and storytelling. All year long you can expect activities and events celebrating all things books at the Richmond Regional Upper Clarence Library.

For more information, visit the National Year of Reading website: www.love2read.org.au.

This Month's Theme: Escape
Escape is the theme for May for the National Year of Reading, and Casino Library is getting into the spirit with a display of travel books showcasing all the wonderful places you can escape to. This display will be up for all of May, so come in and have a look!

Know Your Staff

Each month we will feature a member of staff from our Regional Libraries and ask them some really tough questions!

Our Staff member for May is: Gary from Casino Library

What is the best thing about working in a library?
The variety of work, purchasing new library resources and helping people and seeing new projects come to fruition. Submitting successful grant applications which have funded the mobile library and the Casino Library renovations is very rewarding.

What is the worst thing about working in a library?
The lack of funding which limits some of the services we can offer and trying to keep up with technology. I go to meetings and hear what other libraries are doing and it can be frustrating as we just don’t have enough funds or the knowledge to introduce some of these.

What is the strangest question you have been asked in the library?
There have been some beauties over the years which have left you wondering what is going on. But I guess we are in the information game and here to help so maybe there really are no strange questions.

What does your job entail and how long have you been doing it?
Managing the Regional Library which includes making sure all libraries are staffed adequately; planning the budget, purchasing new materials etc, writing grant applications, liaising with Council staff and other Library Managers in NSW and also the State Library. I have been the Manager since 1997 and have been at the library for 32 years.

Have you always worked in a library?
No I was originally an apprentice chef.

If you were not working in a library, what would your dream job be?
A writer for Lonely Planet or a food critic. (Although I would really like to be a rock star or professional surfer.)
