Water Fluoridation

April 2007

Council received direction from the State Government to introduce fluoride into Casino Water supply by 31 December 2008.

Rous Water has a similar direction (as the supply authority on behalf of Council) for Council's Lower River/Rous Water customers; however fluoridation of this supply is not expected until 2009.

August & November 2008

All residents within Council's Local Government area received information on fluoridation in the mail.  This information was aimed at providing people with the facts about fluoridation.

November 2008

Preliminary works was well underway for the fluoridating plant and equipment.

December 2008

Due to circumstances beyond Council's control, associated with the supply of fluoridation equipment and the commissioning process required to ensure the Water Treatment Plant operates correctly by government agencies, the introduction of fluoride into the Casino Water Supply by 31 December had been delayed.

January 2009

A representative from the Department of Water and Energy inspected the plant to ensure it complies with the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Act 1957, the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Regulation 2002, and the Code of Practice for Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies prior to its commissioning.

February 2009

Council received notice from the NSW Department of Health to commence fluoridation of the Casino Water Supply.

Council introduced fluoride into the town's water supply on 25 February 2009.  In some areas of the Casino network, it may take a few days for fluoride to progress through reservoirs and pipe systems.

The fluoride used in water fluoridation has no detectable taste or smell and it will not alter the appearance of Casino's drinking water.  it will no longer be necessary to take specific fluoride supplements.

Council has been working with the NSW Department of Health, via the North Coast Area Health Service and the "Teeth for Life" Program to promote this public health initiative.
