Vandalism

Richmond Valley Council is experiencing vandalism/breaking and entering to the buildings and properties under its control. The cost to the community for equipment replacement, cleaning and repairs has risen dramatically in recent years.

The community can assist Council in preventing these crimes by reporting all incidents to the Police.

If you see a crime being committed with suspects on the site please contact the Police on 000.

If the crime has been committed and the suspect has left the site please contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

Gopher & Motor Scooter Use on Footpaths
Richmond Valley Council wishes to remind all residents that gophers and/or motor scooters are allowed for use on footpaths however, for all footpath users convenience and safety, the following rules should be observed:-

  • Gophers must travel at a maximum 10km per hour only and should only travel at an appropriate speed on footpaths;
  • Although riders of low powered wheelchairs/gophers are classed as pedestrians they must give way to anyone on foot;
  • Gophers wherever they are driving must not cause danger or obstruction to any person or vehicle on the footpath;
  • Scooters should where possible avoid congested areas and travel slowly.

Electric wheel chairs and gophers give greater mobility to those with restricted movement and should therefore be respected.  Note:  Not all shops or other facilities are designed to accommodate scooters.  Scooter operators should be prepared to leave their scooters outside and walk short distances.

Council thanks all footpath users for their co-operation in these areas.

Swimming Pool Compliance
Council wishes to remind all swimming pool owners of their responsibilities under the Swimming Pool Act 1992.  Any body of water which is greater than 300mm in depth used for human aquatic purposes is considered a swimming pool. Many of the temporary inflatable swimming pools currently being sold and erected in our Council area are required to comply with the provisions of the Act.

The owner of the premises on which a swimming pool is situated must ensure the swimming pool is at all times surrounded by a child-resistant barrier.  A child-resistant fence is:
  • to separate the swimming pool from any residential building and from any place adjoining the premises;
  • to be a minimum height of 1.2 metres above finished ground level and the height of any opening between the fencing and finished ground level shall not exceed 100mm;
  • gate/s must be capable of closing and locking when the gate is opened only 50mm from the latch on the gate post.
In addition, a resuscitation poster must be erected and well maintained in a prominent position in the immediate vicinity of the swimming pool. Further information can be found on the Swimming Pool Compliance page.

Council Officers will be undertaking spot compliance inspections of swimming pools throughout the coming months.  Penalties will apply to owners of swimming pools which do not comply with the requirements of the Swimming Pool Act 1992.
